There are many possibilites for the history behind the name of this famous green Jedi Master. Yoda sounds similar to "Buddha." A Buddha is someone who has achieved perfect spiritual enlightenment. Another similar word is "yoga" which is a Hindu practice that aims to reach a state of inner peace and tranquility. Combining the two would create the name Yoda.
British makeup artist Stuart Freeborn is said to have based Yoda's eyes on Albert Einstein's eyes.
