Minerva McGonagall

 Background
Professor McGonagall is the stern, often reserved, but fair professor at Hogwarts and head of the Gryffindor house. She was named after the Scottish poet William Topaz McGonagall, who is widely regarded as one of the worst poets in British history. Author J.K Rowling picked McGonagall because she "just love[d] the name" (quick-quote-quill.org).

Her first name, Minerva, has Greek origins. In Greek mythology, Minerva was the goddess of wisdom.
