Background |

The name Simba means lion in Swahili. Some events that Simba endures parallel the struggles of Prince Hamlet, in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Both Hamlet and Simba lose their fathers and their kingdoms as a result of the treachery of his uncle (Claudius and Scar, respectively).
Disney also drew on the movie Bambi, for inspiration. Both Simba and Bambi lose parents at a young age. Disney has also acknowledged Biblical influences from the story of Joseph. |
