Edcel Bar Gane is one of the Galactic senators. He was named in honor of George Lucas’s affinity for old cars, since the Edsel car model used to be a bargain. The Edsel, manufactured by Ford in 1958 through 1960, was one of the worst failures in the United States automotive industry.
The Edsel car was named after founder Henry Ford’s son, Edsel Ford. Since the production of the car wars limited to three years, the car has become a prized American collector’s item with top condition convertible versions of the car currently raking in around $100,000 each.
