The rancor is the fierce carnivore that Jabba the Hutt uses to dispose of people that displeased him in Return of the Jedi (1983). Luke Skywalker fought and defeated the beast.
The rancor is named after the noun "rancor" which means bitter, or feeling deep anger. The creature was designed by Phil Tippett, who "describes the rancor as a cross between a gorilla and a potato" ("Rancor").
