  Bruce Wayne acquired chiroptophobia, the fear of bats, in his childhood in Batman Begins (2005). As a child, Wayne fell into an abandoned well and stirred up a large group of bats. The event traumatized the young boy.

When Bruce Wayne resolved to become a superhero, he decided to adopt the visage of his own fear in order to strike fear in the hearts of his enemies.
